We had published an article by Itty Abraham about the Indian porn toon series, Savita Bhabhi (Read It Here)
In the Last few days we have been experiencing increased traffic in The Fish Pond via search queries about Savita Bhabhi. Today it has been confirmed that SavitaBhabhi.com(linked via Corel Cache) has been banned by Govt of India. Contentsutra Report confirms the ban
Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), a government agency under the Department of Information Technology, is the agency that is entrusted under the IT Act to block websites. N. Vijayaditya, of the CCA has confirmed the development. “There were several complaints against the site. We have taken action under the relevant sections of the IT Act and blocked the site,” he said.
A desi Jack Thompson is also quoted in this report:
“Cartoons are a more participative medium. Videos don’t do as much damage. When a child is watching a cartoon, he imagines himself as the character. This has a deeply corrupting influence on our youngsters. This, apart from the fact that an Indian name was being used in such an obscene cartoon, is what led me to make the complaint,” Vijayashankar said. “A child will see a Savitabhabhi among his relatives.”
It can still be accessed via the multiple proxy servers out there.

The ban may be justified but what stops people from visiting the savita bhabhi site using proxies such as http://eproximate.info . Rather than government banning a site, an individual should have the freedom to decide whether he wants to see the site or not.

Dear Anivar,
Thanks for sharing this news here. However, your stand is not very clear from the article, though you seem to be agitated that Savita Bhabhi is banned. Is it that it is bad to have censorship, or it’s bad when state intervenes.. Or is it just about freedom for porn?

In the context of .xxx Internet TLD discussion some of us developed a Position paper as a part WSIS GenderIT caucus which address this question. It is available at GenderIT website(By Jack SM Kee) . Later this position is Developed in GenderIT caucus through the works of Take back the Tech online collective & via other papers like Namita Malhotra’s work on “WEB OF DESIRE: Content Regulation on the Internet”
I observe Internet porn as an extension of porn publications existing in our local markets in the form of “kochupustakam” . A lot of interesting research is going on about Internet porn & censorship . if interested check netporn Reader(2007). Another ongoing project worth following is pleasure & pornography Blog by Namita (as a part of Histories of Internet in India Research by Center for Internet & Socociety)

Freedom is freedom to do(or read) something we do not like and creative ideas originate in a free mind. A society, which can tolerate much, in the name of freedom, will also be gifted much as a result of free thoughts. By limiting freedom we are ensuring that our children are freed from the influence of not only bad thoughts but also good thoughts.
