Weigh the pros and cons and you may find that the society as a whole will benefit.
There are innumerable violations of human rights besides the perception of what UID may or may not do ...
We need to work with solutions to perceived problems as a result of improvements in technology and UID implementation. UID should not be blocked, alternatively, what is it that can be done without implementing it to achieve the stated objectives ? I am sure a debate will be endless ...

The mere thought of the GOI having my bio-metrics on file is enough to give me nightmares. Rather than waste 1900 crore rs on this - why don't they spend it on ensuring that every single Indian has access to food, clean drinking water, health care and education?

That would be a much better investment of the 1900 crores as opposed to building up a bio-metric database of 1 billion plus human beings, which would of course NEVER be sold by our honest, upstanding politicians and govt servants.

DO you people have any idea about the amount of people denied basic services of water, food, healthcare on a daily basis
Governing India with its rate of expansion is an administrative nightmare, and any ambitious scheme is grounded by examples of failures of earlier ones before it. If people were to be so cynical in there approach there would have been no scientific discoveries, actually majority people were cynical they just loved there ever secure status quo without realizing how bad it was. We are loosing precious lives on daily level, and it should not be so with India being teh 5th strongest economic power. We have intelligensia all around but somehow we all seem to be going into circles. UID is a direction, a good one, there might be issues but then we'll solve those issues. On privacy matters - for upper class i think they have more information in public domain via fb and twitter than UID would ever take. and for the lower strata, their human rights are violated on a daily basis by the lack of services, police etc there is no possibility of that going downwards its going to go up. Don't you people realize our world is going through a tech revolution, we all use fb, twitter, websites, and when such thing is being extended to improve governance you are opposing it. Waise bhi if gov wants to track you, it already can with your mobile phone with good enough accuracy. Don't be cynical, believe in the power of democracy, if anything will go wrong we , SC all are there to correct it. Give this ambitious project a fair chance which gives hope to millions.

Privacy issues outnumber the benefits of UID in India and elsewhere. Technologically great but not good for society.

I am in complete agreement with the campaign against UID. It can make us a police state and we will all be policed. Using the poor as an excuse makes it even more inexcusable!

With all due respect to Mr. Stallman if he thinks the UID is a bad idea he should first give up his SSN number and declare it publicy.
