A Vicious Manifesto

A new spectre has started haunting Keralam overnight – The Dalit extremist killer.

Police and talk show hosts are on a frantic chase. The context is puzzling. Following the murder of a young businessman from a prominent family last month, home ministry and police force of the state have been under severe flak. And all of a sudden some Dalit terminators have emerged, killing citizens in cold blood. Headlines and flashes of last week have been dominated by activists of an organisation called Dalit Human Rights Movement, a “mysterious sect against upper castes and left”. ( What one sees in accompanying visuals are  an articulate and assertive Dalit political group, mostly young men and women) Today another murder has been attributed to Kerala Dalit Panthers.

The first reports of the murder allegedly committed by DHRM activists described it as an act to demonstrate the might of the new movement. But latest tales are that they have attacked and inflicted fatal wounds on two women last year during a robbery! There has been no mention about anything related to caste in either incident although the perpetrators are being constantly referred to as ‘based in colonies’; a conscious slip about the Dalit ghettos created by the State under ‘colonisation’ schemes for landless subalterns. It is significant to note that amidst this chaos the left front government has come up with an undisclosed formula to resolve the Chengara land struggle. The State and Marxist party have been howling for the past two years that Chengara struggle is a “foreign funded Maoist endeavour”.  No wonder new Dalit spectres have been identified.
