Bramaram – beetle, honeybee, libertine, dizziness, giddiness, potter’s wheel (DC Malayalam – English Dictionary, 1999)

Bramaram directed by Blessy with Mohanlal in the lead is being marketed as ‘return of the golden age of Malayalam Cinema’.  ‘Golden age’ refers to the time of intense auteur films made by Padmarajan and Bharathan, both departed souls. It’s also being celebrated as ‘the return of Mohanlal.’ The time has come to reclaim the lost ‘Malayaliness’ of cinema, performer and spectator, it seems.

But every ‘return’ has a spooky side to it, and in this case it’s looming large. The authenticity of Bramaram’s claims is being attested in electronic and print media by the Tamil new wave filmmakers Cheran, Sashikumar and Samudrakany. One may bear in mind that Keralam and Malayalam Cinema have always defined themselves as the exact opposite of this particular neighbor and its cinema.

Looks like, only the Other could verify the attributes of Self.
